Moving is exciting. It’s a busy time filled with responsibilities, chores, and work, but it’s also an opportunity for a fresh start and chance to enjoy a new home – perhaps one in a brand new neighborhood.

However, once you’ve put away your moving checklist and you’re in your new home, there are things to do. Here is a list of the most important things you’ll need to take care of post-move.

Ensure all of your Utilities are Up and Running

You want to make sure that your electricity, gas, phones, internet, cable, and anything else you need is up and running in your new home. Even if you’ve contacted all the providers before moving in to set everything up, you’ll want to check and make sure it all works.

If anything isn’t functioning, contact the provider right away. Ensure that your name and billing information is on all the accounts and that everything is set up the way it should be. This will help avoid any potential issues or surprises down the line.

Secure your Home

When you’re coming up with a list of what to do after moving, don’t forget about securing your new home. One of the first steps is to change the locks. You want to make sure that you know exactly how many keys are out there and where they are, and the only way to know this for sure is to have the locks changed.

If your home has a security system installed, contact the provider and let them know that you’ve moved in. Make sure they reactivate the system (if it’s  been deactivated) and change the codes. This way, you’ll be the only one who knows them.

You’ll also need to make sure you know how to work the alarm system. The security company should be able to help you and answer any questions you may have. This will ensure that your home is safe and secure right away, which is crucial.

Update Important Documents

If you haven’t done so already, this is the time to ensure that all important documents have the correct information. That includes updating your driver’s license, letting your bank and any other financial institutions know that you’ve moved, and much more. It’s also important to inform tax agencies, your work, your insurance providers, any subscription services you pay for, and much more.

If you have accounts with online shopping services, change your address on the sites you use. Otherwise, you could end up inadvertently shipping your purchases to your old home.

You may also want to arrange for mail forwarding through the post office. This will help you catch any mail where you forgot to change your address.

Become Familiar with Important Places

One of the best parts of moving to a new home is getting to know the new area. Once you’ve got everything moved and you’ve taken care of the important things in your home, it’s a good idea to become familiar with the places you may need.

Start by making sure you know where the nearest hospital, fire department, and police station are. You never know when you’ll need medical care, and you don’t want to spend time scrambling to find an address when there’s an emergency.

Once you have the emergency services out of the way, think about the other places you’ll want to get to regularly. Where is the nearest grocery store or pharmacy? If you have children, where is the school and what’s the best way to get there? You will also probably want to check out nearby parks and recreation facilities, and these will be important – especially if you have kids.
